"Shania Twain: A Life in Country" (or as the cover says, "Unanimous
presents the story of Shania Twain") by Peter Kane is a British publication,
now available in the US. It's a large 95 page paperback, more on the style
of a coffee-table book, rather than a standard biography.
The first thing that catches your eye are the pictures. Lots of them,
full color, and quite wonderful. Many are old favorites, but some are ones
I've never seen before. Once you tear you eyes away from Shania, you'll
find that Kane has written some pretty cheeky and really funny captions.
Beneath a map of Timmins: "Looks pretty empty, doesn't it?" For a picture
of Shania signing an autograph for a fan: "What do you mean, Faith Hill's
taller?!" And under a picture of Shania in a very revealing stage outfit:"Back
home in Timmins when it's 30 below, all the girls dress like this." Her
stage stance is "riding her imaginary bucking bronco." Lots of fun.
Kane is obviously a fan, and thinks well of Shania. All the standard
biographical info is here, with some interesting quotes and observations.
From how Mutt Lange "builds" a record, ("Like Frankenstein; he pieces little
bits of skin together") to Shania's realization that the failure of her
first album was almost the end of her in Nashville, ("I really thought
that it was all going to happen in stages, that I would have time to come
into my own. I now know how quickly I would have been passed over.")
For those of us desperate for the new album, Kane offers this observation,
which shows he has a good handle on his subject: "What you can safely bet
your house on, is that when it does appear, the timing and contents will
be absolutely right, calculated to the nth degree, just like everything
else bearing her name since The Woman In Me took off."
Is it worth buying? Well, it's not the definitive bio that will someday
be written, but it's a wonderful addition to any collection. (Those pictures!)
Only one mistake. Kane has a list of highest single chart postions. Left
off the zero for Rock This Country. Has it at #3 instead of #30. We wish.....
