On The Way -CD The recordings are not up-to-standard with Shania's later recordings, but if you can overlook the quality of the recordings and appreciate the lyric and vocal performance that Shania gives, you realize that long before Mutt came on the scene, Shania had the gift. Besides the words to a few of the songs, I'm also going to offer my
opinion, review and interpretation of these recordings. Admittedly,
I'm not the most impartial reviewer, however a few of these songs have
touched a chord within me and I feel compelled to write my thoughts about
them.

Hate To Love Review by bmac This is another of what I consider to be two or three songs on "On The Way" or "Beginnings", that show the incredible talent for songwriting that Shania had already developed long before Nashville knew her name. "Hate To Love" is another song with quite a different tone than we hear from Shania in the future. (One has remind to themself that these are recordings made long ago even though they are new to us.) The song is another about lost love. The loss is so painful, that at one point Shania says "I'm afraid to say I need someone like you". And no lyric could be more direct than "I hate to love". Not knowing much at all about Shania's romantic life prior to her meeting Robert John "Mutt" Lange, one suspects that she had some painful relationships with men...or, is this really another symptom from the loss of her parents? "If time heals all it left me behind." She was obviously still in great pain over the loss when she wrote those words. The good news is that Shania was able to get through those very difficult years and love again. Reality was hard to face for a long, long time for Shania, but love has a way of healing even the most broken heart. I love the tempo and tempo changes in this song. The chorus rings quite different from the verses which are slow and soft. Then the chorus jumps out at you as Shania seems to scream out in pain. Again, in my humble opinion, this is a song that can stand up to Shania's present standards. It's well written, emotional and it's subject matter is something that we all can relate to. Everyone of us has had a broken heart at one time or another and the pain will only go away with time. bmac October 24, 1999
