RADIO INTERVIEW - SUMMER 1999

ON THE ROAD - KEEPING IN SHAPE

"I find it fairly easy to manage that and exercise is no problem because I keep my horse with me on the road so I get to ride almost every morning."

It can be hard keeping up your health I guess. mostly because of sleep deprivation, mm you drive every night on the bus and anything over 5 hours I consider difficult because if you cant sleep, if its a bad road for instance..if you dont sleep while the bus is moving you can at least get to sleep once the bus stops but if youve got an 8 or 10 or 15 hour drive then you could end up getting no sleep at all that night. When that happens it can start getting a little tiring for you and its hard to catch up, its hard to get a nap in and what not. So I think thats the biggest challenge for me.

Eating right isnít a challenge for me. I find it fairly easy to manage that and exercise is no problem because I keep my horse with me on the road so I get to ride almost every morning. And just the show. Its a long high energy show so that keeps me in shape aswell.

ON THE TOUR

"The audience touches me every single night."

Its gone way beyond my expectations. The tour as been such an energiser and its just been a whole new life experience for me its been wonderful, in many many ways. The audience touches me every single night. Theres always some erm just some kind of electricity that happens that I cant really explain and its just a magic and I never experienced that before. I mean ive played in front of, I mean tons and tons of live audiences before. But never with my own music. This is what makes this tour unique for me. This is my own music, I wrote this stuff. I wrote these lyrics, I wrote this music. And to make that connection through the music, its unbelievable. And I can say that as a songwriter more than anything else. Because the reason people are relating to me the way they do is because of the music and when you write that music yourself its an extra special connection.

SUPRISES ON TOUR

"We have every age group you can imagine."

I think that what suprises me the most is that city after city the audiences its so extremely mixed. It just blows my mind no matter where we go. No matter where we go in the world actually. The audiences are very very mixed. We have every age group you can imagine.

BRIDGING THE GENERATION GAP

"I think theres just so much of a little bit of everything."

I think that the music, whats very satisfying about whats happened, is that from what I can conclude out of all this, is that my music really has bridged a generation gap. That is very hard to do. I dont really know how to explain why that happens. I mean the..Im not really sure. I think its..I have very high energy and I think that the kids can relate to that type of an energy. I dont know. I mean Im very sporty..mm, the music is lyrically I think very relatable to most women and girls. Doesnít really matter what age you are. Just being a girl. I think you can relate very well to the lyrics. Its just such a mix, i cant really explain it to you. The ballads. I think more than anything, because theres such a variety of music on these albums, you do have ballads that attract the romantic. You have some real pop edged stuff which attracts the pop audience, young and old. It also attracts mm..Country fans, of course, that is my fan base really. Right from the beginning. Theres alot of stuff for them on there. So its, I think theres just so much of a little bit of everything. That there isnít a type of person out there that doesnít relate to at least one song. And thats the only way that I can explain it.

WHAT WOULD SHE CHANGE ABOUT HER TOUR BUS

"I would have put an extra set of speakers in my bus."

I would have put an extra set of speakers in my bus (laughs) I dont quite have a balanced sound in there when Im listening to music. Thats about it. Thats all I would change.

THE MOST IMPORTANT THING PART OF THE LIVE SHOW

"The most important thing to me is the communication with the audience."

You have to keep singing. I know its quite funny, the band always laugh, people always laugh. I mean, I dont know how you can keep singing and I basically do 3 or 4 things at the same time. Im signing autographs, Im bending over, Im shaking hands, Im hugging kids, Im and singing through the whole song. But I think that what people expect or I think appreciate the most, is the communication. If they just wanted to stay home and listen to the music and just listen, then well you can do that. You dont have to go to a concert to do that. So, I got the sound as good as I can get it. And I think that we have very good sound. Theres quite a vibe. Ive got, Ive worked very much on the live sound. Getting it to be as exciting as possible. But the most important thing to me is the communication with the audience. And, yknow, I might miss a word here and there or a note here and there or whatever. But I think the most important part is the communication. And that makes it fun for me every night. And they appreciate it as well, the fans that I include them in the show. Im not seperate from them. Im not entertaining them, I mean if anything there entertaining me. And that keeps it fun and exciting for me every night. I dont really see myself as the entertainer up there. Im up there having a great time. There giving me the laughs and the excitement more than anything I think.

THE END OF THE TOUR

"I'm already looking forward to the next one."

I know its coming to an end and Im very sad about it. Because its been an exciting, fulfilling time in my life. And basically where ive ended up is that I certainly didnt get enough of it. And once I release the next album I'll be back out on tour again. And I'll look forward to it. Im not at all burnt out on it. I mean it as been a long tour as far as the stretch of it. because most people dont go out for this many months at a time. But I had such a great break before I did this tour. From touring. Because I had toured of course for so many years before that. And I think its all about pacing. And ive paced it well enough that when the next album comes out I'll be really ready to get out there again and do it again. Ive had so many great times on this tour and I'll bring so many memories with me. So im already looking forward to the next one.

THE NEXT ALBUM

"I'll be just as suprised where the direction takes me as anybody else."

Yes of course I'll be putting the next album together aswell. So thats gonna be fun and interesting. And I think I'll be just as suprised where the direction takes me as anybody else. Because Im really not sure yet.

ON COME ON OVER

"I think that whats happened to me is very unique."

The album as taken on a new life of course with the live shows. And unlike what I experienced through the woman in me, this album as really introduced me to my audience. Its just a whole other book in my whole story. Because it also crossed audiences. Theres so many pop and ac listeners that now come to my shows aswell as country. And, so Come On Over as been a very significant mark in my career. I dont know, that is such a rare thing to beable to do. And I mean, no one else as successfully done it since probably, I dont know, I dont know when that last happened, many years ago. But, so..i mean Olivia Newton John did that for instance. But she didnít have big a success in country at that time. I think that whats happened to me is very unique. And Im very grateful for it. So that this album Come On Over signifies all of that for me. And its such a huge mark in my career.

THE IMPORTANCE OF YOU'RE STILL THE ONE

"The fans also recognised and appreciated the rootsier side of who I am as a songwriter."

What as happened..mmm..there was a new realisation with Come On Over. The biggest song of my career now to date is Youre Still the One. And Youre Still The One is the type of song that on The Woman In Me didnít exist really on that album. Youre Still The One is something that maybe I would have written when I was a teenager. It was the type of song that I would just sit around and write on my guitar by myself. And that made me realise that the fans also recognised and appreciated the rootsier side of who I am as a songwriter. Because the biggest song I had up until that point was Any Man Of Mine. Which is a completely different type of song. And Im Outta Here also was really huge for me. So those two songs were such a completely different type of song. And so far  removed from something like Youre Still The One, that Ive been allowed to go from one end of the spectrum to the other completely and do complete opposites which is, I mean I am all of those things. And so it allowed me to show another side of my personality. And I realise now that I can be even broader than Id ever imagined, with my own imagination when i'm writing songs. Because, you know i really wasnít sure. I put all this variety stuff on here but not knowing which ones would actually be really the true successes. And Youre Still The One was a suprise to me. I didnít realise that it was going to be as big as it was. I never thought, I mean for a ballad for a slow song. They just arent usually the biggest songs. And I was very suprised and pleasantly suprised because that type of song is so natural for me.

YOU'RE STILL THE ONES SUCCESS

"Its safe to say I had confidence that it would do well."

No I wouldnít have thought that. I mean I wouldnít have thought it would have been the biggest. I was, I mean Im not gonna undermine my own music. I think its safe to say I had confidence that it would do well. I mean but whats well exactly? I mean from one to ten I dont know. For it to be actually the biggest song of my career right now, mm is certainly a suprise.

YOU'VE GOT A WAY

"Youíve Got A Way. Is probably the most intimate song that I have written and recorded."

Youíve Got A Way. Is probably the most intimate song that I have written and recorded anyway. And the fact that it actually has the opportunity that it does right now really, really thrills me because the movie is so perfect with this song. Notting Hill is such a beautiful love story. And I just think that the song. I mean if I was gonna put a movie together or in my mind visually have, wanting to express this song, I dont think that it could be done any better than with Notting Hill.

NOTTING HILL - THE MOVIE

"Im a really big fan of Julia Roberts."

Well its a polygram picture. And of course Im polygram. So, they, they just said hey weve got this movie coming out and we think that Youíve Got A Way is perfect for it. Heres some footage let us know what you think. If you agree of not. And of course I did. I loved it. I mean Im a really big fan of Julia Roberts anyway. But its such a beautiful little story I just love the way they put this whole movie together. And I could relate so well to the movie too. I mean shes, I dont wanna the whole thing away but, I can, people will understand. I mean any celebrity and the way the two worlds come together is very charming. So I love the whole idea. I love the fact the song is on the soundtrack.

ON HER NEW HOME IN SWITZERLAND

"We have a Vineyard on our property which is very cool."

Well I dont live there yet. I havent moved in yet. I have nothing there yet. (laughs) Its just really in the stage of being painted right now. Its an old house, built in the early eighteen hundreds. And its really beautiful. It overlooks the Alps. Thats my view. The Alps. We have a Vineyard on our property which is very cool.

WHY SWITZERLAND?

"Switzerland is really one of those low key kind of places."

Well we wanted to live in a place with four seasons. Mutts from Europe. And he lived there for many, many years. And I was just game to try anything new actually. So we went around looking at places that were four seasons. And Skiings very close. Its just a very beautiful place. I wanted to go somewhere as quiet as possible. And that, where I could escape fame, sort of that really was my key thing. Where in the world can we go where I could actually escape that. Switzerland is really one of those low key kind of places.

WHERE SHANIA LOVES TO BE

"Usually where I let loose and sing out loud and because I know theres nobody around."

I like being in the stable. Thats one of my favourite places to be. I love to listen to music there. Its probably where I listen to most music actually. In the stable when im working around. In the stable cleaning stalls, or grooming the horses. I'll blast the music. Thats usually where I let loose and sing out loud and because I know theres nobody around and its my own private space, so actually thats where I listen to most music in the stable.

HER NEW CAR AND ADJUSTING

"Mutt had to practically talk me into buying this car and it is extravagant for me."

I did. I bought a roadster BMW. I wanted, I wanted to just buy a regular little something. I mean, I dont, im not really a big car fan. I dont know much about cars and Id be happy with you know just anything, I mean some small little thing. I needed something small parkings really difficult over there. So I wasnít really gonna build the driver. A truck, truck. So I was gonna need something quite small until I get used to the space. The lack of space. I was happy to buy one of those new little bugs, those little Volkswagen bugs or something small. And er..he talked me into getting, treating myself to something yknow more than, yknow. So I said okay, well fine I'll go with, I'll try the BMW out. I hope I like it. I mean I love the car. I like the way it looks and everything. But I was just never one to, I feel that it is extravagant. I mean ive never owned anything extravagant. Well I couldnít afford it before. And now that I can afford it I still have to adjust psychologically. I mean I dont really, Im not really used to having money yet. I mean Ive had money now for a few years. But I havent really had any time to spend it. So I havent really adjusted to having money. I really am not a big spender anyway. And I dont think I ever will. I mean Mutt had to practically talk me into buying this car and it is extravagant for me. And really I spend alot on those sorts of things. I never will. I like to buy things for my family and stuff. And I wouldnít feel the same way, I think for others. But for myself, I dont know. Im one of these people that, as long as I have everything that I need, Im quite content. I dont really ever get the longing for something really extravagant or expensive. Maybe now Im just too busy. Maybe if I ever get bored in my life, maybe that will change, but at this point theres no time to shop anyway.

BEING AWAY FROM FAMILY

"Id like to get a cottage in Canada anyway."

Well I think maybe I would have a few years ago. But yknow since I do so much travelling now, my families always far away. Its really nothing now I realise how small the world really is. With the transport that we have now its, yknow what it doesnít really matter where you live. Your family can always be with you whenever you want to bring them over. Or I can go to Canada. Id like to get a cottage in Canada anyway. Somewhere close to my family. You know what it just, its not even a factor now, that I travel so much. Its really, it doesnít mean anything. Its just a flight away.

WHAT SHANIA WOULD REALLY LIKE TO DO

"I love to write. I think I would like to get into erm maybe a novel or something."

Thats a tough question. I think theres alot of things, theres certainly are alot of things that I havent tried yet. Yknow that I havent really experienced or experimented with. Acting is one of them. I get asked about all the time. And I think if the right script came along Id be interested in something like that. Id be particularly interested in writing music for a movies. Creatively theres definitely alot more to what I would need to do to be completely fulfilled. I would like to write music for other things, than just for myself, especially for other artists or maybe for film or for something else. Music, theres such a huge scope out there to explore, that of course I couldnít be completely satisfied writing music for my own, for myself as the artist. I also love to just write in general. I love to write. I think I would like to get into erm maybe a novel or something, I mean I just would seriously like to get more into writing in general. Im not just a songwriter. I like to write stories and when I read, I read quite abit. And when I read I come from a different angle when I read. I like to read, Im interested in the style of the writer aswell and how the writer puts it all together and how he uses the English language to express and to colour a story. Because the story itself isnít always whats the most interesting, its the way its written that is also that intrigues me, very, very much. So I think that writing in general is something Im going to explore, much, much more in the future.

THE DOUBLE DIAMOND AWARD

"You either sell back to back diamonds or you dont."

The double diamond is very special because its based on statistics. Its not something thats judged or you know theres no, yeah its not a vote. Its, you either have a double diamond or you dont. (laughs) I mean theres no in-between. Its not anybodyís opinion as to whether you worthy of that. Its earned. Its an achievement that not alot of people have..mm have achieved, so I mean no one can ever take that away from me, no one can ever, nobody can be critical of that. Its just what it is. You either sell back to back diamonds or you dont.

PROUD OF THE DOUBLE DIAMOND AWARD

"It gives me so much to look back on and to be proud of, its my career as gone so well, Ive worked so hard."

I am. Because, it does blow my mind because its such a rare, its such a rarity. That you cant help but recognise how unique that is. And be just so grateful for that. It gives me so much to look back on and to be proud of, its my career as gone so well, Ive worked so hard. You look around you and everyoneís working hard but not every body is succeeding at the same rate and the same level. And thats where it becomes very humbling and you realise that your just very lucky.

NEW CHALLENGES

"To write songs that other people have success with would almost be even more satisfying than doing it myself."

I have reached a level with what Im doing at the moment of satisfaction for sure. I can honestly say that Im ready to take on new challenges for sure, Im at the point where I feel like, you were saying earlier, to just have another diamond album or not just, I mean to do that again. May not even happen, I'll be lucky if it does, because it would be again a very difficult thing to achieve. That much strength and longevity but I do need a little bit more than that now. Because I have reached a point where you know how much more do you really want out of one thing. And thats why I say I mean to write songs that other people have success with would almost be even more satisfying than doing it myself.

THE NEXT ALBUM

"I think the challenge is to always find new and more interesting ways of expressing myself musically that people maybe werenít expecting."

No the plan is to definitely give more of that. I think that people can expect more of the stuff they loved off this album. And I'm definitely not going to take a complete left turn all of a sudden. I want of give people more of what I know they like. And then try and suprise them with something extra and something more that they werenít expecting. I think thats the only place for me to go. I dont want to abandon what people love about my music. I dont think that, thats going to do me or anybody any justice. I think its best to do what your good at and what people can relate to. Because I enjoy it. I dont compromise with my music, I enjoy what Im doing, so I dont feel the need even creatively to make such a drastic change. I think the challenge is to always find new and more interesting ways of expressing myself musically that people maybe werenít expecting.

THE EARLY DAYS

"How could I even remotely ask for any more."

That was very generous of him actually to do that. I love looking back at everything, I did see Toby Keith who was part of my triple play, my very first tour as a recording artist. Great guy its great to see those people again. I definitely have come a long, long way since that first album. And it almost just seems like a blur its gone by so fast. Because it hasnít been very long. For everything thats happened in the interim but how could I even remotely ask for any more. I mean Im very happy with everything.
